      EXPERT GUIDANCE

Developing a custom ring is a process requiring utmost trust in expertise, craftsmanship, and creativity. Material Good is represented by an exceptional team of dedicated specialists who help guarantee a singular level of personalized attention to detail and client service throughout the entire process.

      What To Expect

We begin with a high level education to make sure we can speak the same language as we work together to determine the best stone, design, and material for your ring. Please take a moment to read through the following educational resource we’ve prepared as a way to ensure you are starting off on the right track.

Upon receiving your submitted inquiry, a specialist will reach out to you within 48 hours. All of our bespoke pieces will require a deposit, to be determined with your specialist, before we begin working together on your piece. This deposit will go towards the final cost of your custom piece.

All custom work takes approximately 2-6 weeks from the time the final design is agreed upon.

      Understanding Diamonds

      THE GIA CERTIFICATION

Our specialists will only source and offer you diamonds which have been graded and certified by the Gemological Institute of America (the GIA).  Purchasing a diamond that has been verified by an independent third-party laboratory such as the GIA is extremely important, and the GIA is internationally recognized as having the highest standards of grading.  The GIA verifies the diamonds are real, and produces a grading certificate unique to each diamond they assess.  Listed will be technical measurements as well as grades for color and clarity, which applies to all the different shapes of diamonds.  Only round diamonds will receive a cut grade.  All of these specifications allow for there to be a streamlined way of looking at, discussing, and purchasing diamonds.

      GIA grading

Each diamond selected for your consideration will be presented along with a copy of its certificate, and our specialists will make sure you understand how to read the certificate.  However, it is also important to keep in mind that the task of the diamond cutter is to make the diamond look as “white” and “eye-clean” as possible - meaning, if there are inclusions within the diamond they are unable to be spotted without the aid of a jewelers loupe, and the color of the original rough diamond is faceted in a way so that color doesn’t present as strongly once cut.  Because of this the GIA diamond grader will work with the diamond “table down” or “face down”, upside down so they can record an accurate read on color and clarity without the faceting obscuring inclusions and color. So, a GIA certificate is very important. But because of the way the diamonds are graded they must be viewed in person. After all, a diamond is not a piece of paper.

      Understanding Diamonds

      THE 4 Cs

We examine all of these above parameters, along with your budget, to be able to curate the perfect selection for you to choose from. We play around with different combinations of carat weight, color, and clarity, to figure out what type of combination you prefer, and tailor the selection further from there. Do you opt for a lower carat weight, but a high color and high clarity? Do you opt for a higher carat weight, but lower color and lower clarity? Or are there any other combinations you’d like to see?

      Carat

This is simply the weight of the diamond when you place it on a diamond scale.  The carat weight of the diamond often does not correspond to the physical size of the diamond, which is also dependent on the cut.  However, because there is only one way to cut round diamonds, rounds are awarded a cut grade by the GIA so you can look at the millimeter diameter of a round diamond and correctly assume its general weight but the same is not true for all other diamond shapes.

      Color

The GIA grades white diamond color on a scale of “D to Z”, with D color being “colorless” and Z color being “dark warm yellow tint”.  D, E, and F color are generally grouped together, as the color difference between them is negligible.  G, H, I, and J color are generally grouped together as being “near colorless”, as it is difficult to pick up any warm color when viewing these diamonds “face up”, and can be grouped together in sets of neighbors G-H, H-I, and I-J, as having negligible color difference between them.  Warm color can really start to be seen face up in K color down to Z color.

      Clarity

Diamonds are created deep within the Earth, carbon which has been crystalized under tremendous pressure and heat.  During this formation process there can be features which are left within the diamond.  These features are called “inclusions”, because they are a part of the diamond - included within it.  They are not flaws and do not effect the integrity of the diamond.  The GIA grades diamond clarity on a scale of FL down to I2.  FL (Flawless) and IF (Internally Flawless) mean there are no inclusions within the diamond.  VVS1 and VVS2 (Very Very Slightly Included 1-2) mean there are next to no inclusions, and could require a microscope in the lab to see them.  VS1 and VS2 (Very Slightly Included 1-2) mean there are very few inclusions within the diamond and they require the aid of a loupe to view them.  SI1 snd SI2 (Slightly Included 1-2) mean that there is a slight chance, much less so with SI1 and more so with SI2, that an inclusion can be seen with the naked eye.  And I1 and I2 (Included 1-2) means that there are heavy inclusions throughout the diamond.

      Cut

In a well cut diamond, light enters through the flat area at its top (called the table), bounces around the hall-of-mirrors-like faceting in its middle (called the pavilion), and returns back out through the table producing the fire, brilliance, and scintillation of an attractive diamond.  A diamond being cut too deep or too shallow will have a negative effect on the light return, resulting in glassiness or darkness.  We seek diamonds which are cut slightly more shallow but still retain their beauty, resulting in seeing more of the carat weight being spread across the top of the diamond instead of being kept down in the pavilion.
