Description
The 5402ST is the original Royal Oak. Gérald Genta drew it in 1972, and AP launched it as a stainless steel sports watch priced like a precious-metal dress watch. C Series examples come from the model’s early production, when the design was still proving itself to a skeptical market.
The 39mm case, eight-screw octagonal bezel, and integrated bracelet are the template every later Royal Oak follows. Inside is the ultra-thin calibre 2121, which keeps the watch remarkably slim for an automatic.
The blue Tapisserie dial carries diamond hour markers in place of the usual applied batons. They add a touch of brilliance while leaving the dial’s texture and the case’s geometry intact.
Early steel Royal Oak, blue dial, diamonds at the hours.
