Rolex Datejust 116238 Onyx Dial

The Datejust has occupied a foundational position in Rolex’s catalog and in watchmaking history since 1945 — the first self-winding wristwatch to display the date in a magnified window, its design resolved with such conviction across eight decades of continuous production that meaningful alteration has remained essentially unnecessary. In yellow gold with an onyx dial, the 116238 delivers that founding proposition in its most formally dramatic configuration.

The onyx dial — deep, absolute, its mineral darkness absorbing light with a quality that lacquered dials of equivalent depth cannot replicate — sits against yellow gold with a chromatic contrast of immediate and enduring authority. Each onyx dial is cut from natural stone, its surface possessing an organic depth and consistency that manufactured dial materials approach but never equal. Against the fluted yellow gold bezel’s characteristic scalloped warmth, the onyx achieves a formal drama that the reference’s more conventional dial configurations deliberately avoid.

The calibre 3136 within delivers Rolex’s current-generation movement architecture beneath a dial and case combination that has attracted consistent and significant collector attention. Yellow gold, fluted bezel, onyx. The Datejust at its most formally magnificent.
